What a Great Last Morning of the Year

I was wide awake quite early this morning for some reason.  After resting in bed for just a little longer I got up and got busy.  My sister, BIL and SB met me at the gym this morning for a wonderful 1 1/2 hour workout.  I got in 6 miles on the bike again, 1 – 8 min mile on the treadmill and a 30 minute circuit workout.  I’m feeling good at the moment, but I am sure the feel good muscle aches will kick in before too long.  All worth it though.  I am already feeling better about myself.  It is amazing what a little exercise can do.

I also spent some me time in the salon this morning to get my hair trimmed.  The last time I got it cut back in July I got 10 inches cut off.  This time I just got it shaped and thinned out a little so it doesn’t look like such a ragtop.

New Hair Cut

I also stocked up on some delicious veggies and fruits to get me back on track with eating right.  Why are groceries so expensive anymore…especially the good for you groceries.  At least I did save over $15.00 with my bonus card.

I’ve been enjoying reading everyone’s year reflections and new goals for 2012.  I am planning on taking some time this afternoon jotting down a few of my own.  It has been a great year and I am looking forward to what 2012 has in store for me.

Keeping Active

Although I didn't "work out" yesterday or today, I was extremely active.  Being active with walks, hikes, lifting wood and rocks, sweeping and scrubbing the floor kept me busy and gave me that extra boost of energy that I often get from working out.  Plus it is great to look back at everything I accomplished!

Yesterday I started putting together a little project.  I've been wanting a little shelf/organizer that slides between my washer and dryer like this one:

So I dug into our stacks of lumber, Cowboy has laying around, picked out a few pieces and got busy sketching, planning, measuring, cutting, and gluing.  Today I was able to plane down some of the shelves and finish gluing together the ends.  Hopefully by Monday I will have some pictures of my finished project.  With all my supplies I've only spent $14.00 but advertised online the shelf costs around $40.00!  Score for saving money and building something by myself.  Cowboy only had to help me with the biscuit cutter (I'm not sure that is the official name or spelling of the tool we used, but that is what I call it.)

I also went on a four hour hike/adventure through the woods with Cowboy and the 'coon dogs last night.  What an adventure it was.  Needless to say my legs and feet were tuckered out from walking stumbling around the woods in my big ol' insulated boots and dressed like the staypuff marshmallow woman.  We got home at 1:30 and I was tucked in bed by 1:43.  That was WAY past this girl’s bedtime.

Time to go get in a quick Pilates workout, stretch out my muscles and work on these abs a bit before enjoying homemade ruben sandwiches...um, um, um.  Hoping to hit up the gym tomorrow and go for another short run to keep this workout motivation moving right along.

Back to Square One

Well, it isn't the new year yet...but I am trying to get back into a workout routine.  I've been in a workout slump since September and I've tried to pull myself out a few times but it hasn't worked.  The winter months always get me a little down in the dumps.  However, as usual around this time I start to feel squishy and not so comfortable in my own body.  So back to square one I go.

I certainly felt like I was on square one when I was running today. Lesson Learned - I should never stop my running routine.  Building those running muscles back up is not easy, everything grumbles and aches.  I know though that with just a few weeks I will be back on track and it won't feel so difficult to run a few miles.

Yesterday I made it to gym with Manda and SB and it felt great to do 6 miles on the bike, almost a mile on the stair stepper thingy mabob and then some ab work.  Today I am feeling it and realize just how out of shape I've let myself get.  I'm hoping I'm not stuck on Square One of running and fitness for long with a little determination and focus.  I hope that I can get back into the routine of  working out, running and blogging.  And of course juggling school, crazy dogs and an even crazier husband.

First Time for Everything

This weekend so far, I've had two firsts...

First Snow Fall - As I look at my window this morning it looks like Christmas time.  Everything is white, everywhere.  The snow is covering all the tree branches and it looks like a winter wonderland  - on October 30th.  Yikes....what is the rest of the winter going to look like?  I am a little scared!

First Overall Female - I met up with my sisters for another race this weekend.  It was another small, really small  race - only about 35 walkers and runners.  They were well organized and did give out technical t-shirt instead of cotton t-shirts.  Which is unusual in these neck of the woods.  But the smalls weren't really smalls so I got mine in a size Cowboy could wear.  The girls and I did a quick warmup before the race started and then we were off.

Many of the regulars weren't there and within just the first half mile of the race I realized that I was first female.  At the turnaround I was able to see my sisters and just 2 other ladies behind me.  I definitely wasn't super speedy, but I did manage to keep a decent 8 minute pace to keep the lead.  I finished in the same time as last week 24:05.  Robyn finished as second female and Manda finished as fourth female.  SB is having some issues with her leg/ankle, so she just walked it.  Needless to say - that girl walks at a jogging pace.  We went back to get her and bring  her in and none of us could walk at her pace.  We all had to break into a jog to keep up.

Overall it was a good race and if the weather hadn't been so yucky (rainy, cold, dreary and snow looming) I think they might have gotten a few more runners.  This is a busy time for races though - I think there was a least two other races in the area.!

The rest of my day was really nice. I ran some errands and then came home to snuggle with my doggies, drink hot chocolate and watch the snow fall.  Today I have some cleaning to do and then my FAVORITEST little trick-or-treater is coming to visit.  I will be sure to take some pictures of that little cutie!

QOTD:  What is the earliest snowfall you've experienced?

TGIF...and winter weather already..

Another week has flown by and I've been absent from posting on my blog.  Oh well.  I'm sure I haven't been missed by too many.  I've been reading all of your blogs and living vicariously through your adventures and workouts.

I've still been slacking on the whole working out/running stuff....  I don't know why, I've just been going through quite the slump and really hope I can fight my way out of it soon.  I did get out for a run today with my Sissy.  We met after school and did some zigging and zagging on the roads behind her house.  It is an easy run with lots of houses and trees to block the wind.  It was just enough to get my legs stretched out and ready for another 5k race jog tomorrow.  My baby sis and SIL are running the race too...we've contemplated running in snuggies and snow boots since we are getting some winter weather in OCTOBER!

The crazy weatherman is forecasting 4-8 inches of the white stuff starting tonight and throughout tomorrow.  I even heard him say "heavy at times."  Ugh!  I didn't even get to enjoy fall.  Here we are skipping right on into winter.

Oh well. I will survive the weather, but I'm not sure I'll survive the race based on the fuel I fed myself tonight.  I'm a hunter's widow again so just ME to feed and I settled on pizza, cheese filled pretzel bites, glass of green tea and now a glass of blackberry wine.  I should probably have skipped that last part.  Wait....I should have skipped all of it and had a healthy non-processed meal.  Oh well.  Live and Learn right?

I think today's motto is "Oh Well!"

QOTD:  What have you "oh well-ed" lately?

Race Recap and Saturday Fun

What a nice Saturday being a hunting widow.  Amanda, SB and I had a great day yesterday as they too end up being hunting widows since all of our men spend the next month out in the woods.

We started our adventures by meeting up for the first Monster Dash to benefit a local elementary school.  We got there at the same time and went to pick up our race packets.  For an first time race it was pretty organized as far as race packets and getting started.  The race started on time and we took off following closely behind the leaders since it was a small race.  Right at the start we were suppose to turn right but the leader turned left.  They did not have any volunteers stationed at the corners to help direct the runners.  All they had was little 8 1/2 x 11 posters with a tiny arrow on it.  Luckily SB and I only went a few strides beyond the sign but we still had to fight with other runners and walkers to get back to the front of the pack.  It wasn't long before the leaders caught up and passed us.  Shortly after the first mile there was one other turn that was missed because the volunteer wasn't at the right spot - but that worked out ok.

I liked the course it was generally flat and went by quickly after the boo-boos. From then on SB and I confirmed with every volunteer were to turn next.  Around mile 1.5, SB and I realized that we were 2nd and 3rd lady so we did our best to keep the spots even though we weren't trying to race. We finished strong and finished together  Amanda was just two minutes behind us for one of her best finished yet!!

After the race, we came back to my place to get cleaned up and ready for lunch and a movie.  I've been itching to see Footloose so I convinced the girls to join me.  It was really well done I think.  Modernized but at the same time they kept the look and feel of the original Footloose with many of the same outfits.  We also did a little shopping and window browsing.

When I got home I enjoyed some time with my little doggies outside and eventually made my way back inside to clean and work on schoolwork.  I ended the night by cuddling up on the couch to enjoy yet another sappy hallmark movie.  They are silly and predictable but I enjoy them.

Now it is time to start another gorgeous fall day here in the Northeast.  Since schoolwork is done I have the day to enjoy before the husband gets home from his hunting adventures.  Hummmm.....what will I get into today.

QOTD:  Have you ever made a wrong run in a race or gotten "lost"?

Monster Dash

Another busy week flew by for me.   But life is good!!  I had a good week at school and even got in two nice runs with my family.  We did just a a 3 miler on Tuesday and a quick 2 miler today but both runs got my legs all stretched out for tomorrow's Monster Dash.  This is the first race I've done since my half marathon in September and the first of two before Halloween.  A lot of people are dressing up in costume to run, but I think I will just go as a runner.  I'm not too creative this year.

Hunting season has started in my neck of the woods so I will have some more ME Time in the next few weeks which I am really looking forward to.  I use this time to get things done that I want to do, spend some time shopping, get my haircut, have some girl time with my sisters and spend some much needed time curled up on the couch with good movies and good books.

So tonight is my first night and I am off to a great start.  A cup of hot chocolate, a fuzzy blanket and playing catch up on a few tv shows.  Tomorrow the race, lunch-n-movies with the sisters and some time at home cleaning things up.

QOTD:  Do you have any fun Halloween races coming up?

Much Needed Cowboy Time

I just spent a wonderful day with my husband.  It was a much needed day date!  We took a road trip and went to the world famous Cabela's store.  That place is HUGE!  We go every now and then when Cowboy needs to stock up on some hunting stuff.  I, of course, found a few things too...new boots, a fleece jacket, warm underarmor type clothing, and comfy slippers.  We stopped and got lunch and then came home to get some things done around here on our neverending list.

It is so nice to spend the day together not worrying about things and just enjoying our time together.  We don't do it often enough but when we do I am so thankful and grateful of the time together with my best friend.

This week was a busy one.  I never felt like I had my act together...it was just a rush here, rush there and hurry to get things done.  I haven't been doing so hot on my month goals, so I am going to focus on those this week and try to get back on track.  Still haven't done much running...but in my defense it has been raining alot again.  I had a Family Fun Run planned but it was raining pretty hard yesterday when I got out of school and it was that no fun, chilly cold rain so we decided to skip the run.

Tomorrow will be busy too but I hope to take the time to relax and maybe get some yoga or a run in.  My in-laws are coming to visit so I will be straightening up the house and getting some lunch ready for us.  I've been hungry for chicken corn soup so that is on the menu for tomorrow.  Sometime in there I need to work on some lesson plans too.  Before I call it a night I am going to work on touching up some of my pictures that I took of my beautiful niece and my sister and brother-in-law.  They didn't turn out too bad, but the lightening should have been much better so I have some tweaking to do.

The most delicious chicken

I have to apologize....this is a blog about alot of things, and when I originally started it, it focused on running.  I'm sorry I haven't been blogging much about running.  I've been in a little bit of a running rut lately.  I just haven't had the motivation.  Other things bounce in front of running.  School is keeping me busy and exhausted and by the time it is done, I'm ready to crash. I will come back to running...I always do...please bear with me while I gather some motivation and get my butt back into gear.

I like to keep things focused on not only running and excerise here on the blog but also like to talk about a ways to keep healthy.  I've really been taking a look lately at what I eat and the food I prepare not only for me but for my Cowboy too.  I get frustrated with cooking healthy, good-for-you-meals, because they take too long however, I am finding many ways to still do that but shorten the time.

My in-laws got me the Wolfgang Puck 5-Quart Electronic Pressure Cooker last christmas and I have used it quite a bit.  Not as much as I can or should...I'm getting there.  One of the best thing about this cooker is that it cooks things fast and they taste so good!

This gadget combines steam, heat, and pressure--while retaining all the nutrients and flavor of food.  It cuts cooking time down by 70%.  Today I cooked two split chicken breasts (bone in) for 15 minutes in my pressure cooker with cream of chicken soup and it was so tender, moist and DELICIOUS.   Just melt in your mouth delicious.  You can toss all kinds of things in this cooker...you can even delay the start up to 9 hours for those away from the kitchen during the day.  I haven't had anything turn out bad and am always amazed at how quick and delicious the end result is.  I've even put in a frozen pot roast and had it done and on the table in an hour.  It's great for vegetables and soups too.

Just thought I'd share today, one tool that helps me cook those good and healthy meals quickly.  I served the chicken tonight with steamed carrots and rice and it was a hit with Cowboy - plus we have leftover chicken to make chicken sandwiches tomorrow for lunch!  Win-win!

QOTD:  What kitchen tool makes your time in the kitchen easier?

Motivational Monday - Famous Quote

Last week I saw this great quote in an article about the life and successes of Steve Jobs.  I copied and pasted the quote and set it aside.  I love what it says and what it conveys for so many things in life - not just a job.
"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.  If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on."  Steve Jobs, Stanford University - 2005 commencement address.

Indian Summer

I love Indian Summer days.  It feels like fall, but with that touch of summer in the air which makes for another gorgeous day.  I got a lot done and had a chance to relax as well.

Richie and I got up early and went to help finish up the roof we were re-doing for my Aunt.  The boys got most of it done yesterday, so this morning it only took about 2 hours to finish up.  It is amazing how quickly roofing can get done when the roof is full of people the whole way across.  When we got home we got busy taking care of the garden to get it ready for winter.  I also got some other things ready for winter as well.

After all that hard work a nap was on the schedule before taking my beagles to the club to chase some rabbits around.  It was so beautiful this evening.  The club is out in the middle of nowhere and the running pen we were in is on top of the hill.  Here's a pictures from earlier this summer from the top of the hill and then a few cell phone pictures of the gorgeous sunset tonight.

Such a peaceful way to wrap up my wonderful day.  When we got home I cooked up some of my homegrown pumpkins and am anxiously waiting for breakfast.  I am going to try out Clean Eating Chelsey's very yummy looking oatmeal pumpkin pancakes.  I am also going to make up some pumpkin bread which I haven't made before and if I have any pumpkin left over a pumpkin pie will be next on the list.  In case, I haven't mentioned it...I.LOVE.FALL.!!!!!!  This is definitely my favorite time of the year for soooo many reasons.

QOTD:  What is your favorite pumpkin receipe?

Gorgeous Fall Day

We are finally having some gorgeous weather here in the Northeast.  Fall, my favorite time of year plus lots of sunshine and a fall like breeze makes for a happy girl.  I got a chance to meet up with my sisters for a run this afternoon.  First run since the half marathon on September 24th but I felt pretty good.  We didn't go very far or run very fast but I loved every minute of it because I was with my sisters and niece who babbled the whole way.

Now it is time to curl up with a hot cup of tea, my cozy blankets, and a few doggies for some Friday night tv and of course probably an early bedtime.  I am quite the party animal on Friday as are most other school teachers.  I can hold it together all week but by the time Friday evening gets here my batteries are flashing a danger LOW, LOW, LOW warning and then...poof...lights are out.

This weekend looks gorgeous and I am looking forward to spending some time outside getting things around here ready for winter.  We got a list a mile long that I sure will keep us busy.  Hope ya'll have a great weekend?

QOTD:  Any fall like activities planned for your weekend?  I am going to plan some more time tomorrow to bake some fall goodies and cook down some of my pumpkins for some pumpkin bread.

Eating Healthy

This time of year is always crazy for me and because of that my fitness activites go by the wayside rather quickly.  So since I'm not exercising as much I find myself watching what I eat a lot more extensively.  Especially so the older I get.  I can't eat what I use to be able to eat anytime, anyplace I wanted.  I am also a lot more aware of what is healthy and good for me.  Although I don't do a great job, I am consciously trying to buy and prepare whole foods more often then I did before.

I grew up eating a mix of whole foods and processed box foods - but often times homecooked, from scratch meals with food from the garden throughout the whole year.  But there in my twenties when it was all up to me, I ate out a lot more and made the quick and easy processed foods - from the box type of meals.  Not that they are BAD for you just not as good for you as fresh produce and whole foods.

Here's what I've learned in just a little bit of researching:
Processed foods are produced using manufacturing methods to transform raw ingredients into neatly packaged goods, which have a longer shelf life. Monosodium glutamate (MSG), flavors, preservatives, hydrogenated oil, fillers, and artificial sweeteners are just some of the artifical ingredients used in processed foods. Usually, consumers can prepare them quickly without a lot of time and effort. However, they don’t offer much in nutritional value.
Whole foods are grown in orchards, gardens, or greenhouses, are unprocessed and unrefined, and have a shorter shelf life. These foods are authentically flavorful, have vibrant colors, and rich textures. Moreover, they are full of the micronutrient vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals, and fiber. Typically, they require longer preparation times.  (Source: http://www.naturalnews.com/022175.html#ixzz1ZrBc7zvJ)
Along with thinking about the difference in those two, I find myself thinking more about my balanced meals and getting the "right foods" and "right amounts" from the food pryamid food plate.

Source

I vote thumbs up for this new interpretation of the food pyramid.  Definitely a much different way of thinking about the types and quantity of foods you need to eat at each meal and in my own opinion a better way to think about things.  I think this is easy for kids to understand and that is where healthy eating really starts.  If a child is eating a well balanced, whole food type of meal often growing up they are more likely to stick with it or come back to it when they get older.

Just my two cents for the day....all spurred on by my whole foods dinner tonight as I work towards my goals for the month.

QOTD:  What do you think about the food plate?  How do you measure up?  Does your plate usually look like the diagram?  What kind of foods did you eat growing up versus the foods you eat today?

Happy Dance Misinterpreted

This morning I laid in bed and listened carefully holding my breathe. I didn't believe what my little ears heard, so I jumped out of bed and was so excited to see that it wasn't raining.  I did a little happy dance and started on with my day.  Not 30 minutes later it started to rain.  I think my happy dance was misinterpreted as a rain dance and I've learned my lesson.  I am hoping Mr.WeatherMan is right and the sun comes out to stick around a while on Wednesday and throughout the week.

I didn't managed to get a run in today due to a meeting after work, but I am going planning on a short two miles tomorrow with Copper and some yoga. I have Jillian's Yoga dvd but really need to do some shopping for some relaxing and meditative yoga dvds, not just power yoga.  Any favorites that you use?

Tonight I am going to work on some stretching to try to get some flexibility back and a few gazillion ab exercises.  I definitely need to figure out my fall/winter exercise routine here quickly.  I hate when my body adjusts to the seasons and doesn't look or feel the way I want it to.

I also have a few questions for you overnight oats people....I am going to try some overnight oats for the first time tomorrow.  I've been eating a lot more oatmeal on the weekends, and have made it a few times before school, but usually end up running out of time.  So I whipped up some and put it in the fridge.  I don't think I will like them cold, can you heat them up in the morning??  Also, what are some of your favorite toppings?  I like the simple brown sugar but Saturday I tried some peanut butter on top and decided that was pretty delicious too.  Any recommendations?

Rain, rain, go away.

I can't believe it is raining again.  I should believe it by now, because that is all it does around here anymore.  We haven't seen very much of that big yellow ball in the sky.

I didn't get as much done as I wanted to yesterday, but I definitely had a chance to relax and take it easy.  I think today is another one of those days after I work on getting some lesson plans and grading done.  I made the house smell delicious yesterday with some baked goodies and I whipped up my favorite snack, Spinach and Artichoke dip.  It was so yummy.  Last night I made my homemade New England clam chowder and am looking forward to the leftovers on this rainy dreary day.

As for running, since this blog is suppose to be about running, it just hasn't been happening.  I hope it was just the month of September but I really struggled with getting myself out the door for a run.  I still enjoy running just not with the same passion that I had years ago.  I like to keep my fitness and cardio level up so I don't want to give up running but I just don't know how to motivate myself to stick with it.  The only tried and true way for me is to put some races on my calendar.  If I know that I have a race coming up I usually manage to get myself out the door.  So I thought I would put together a few goals and races for October.
  • Run at least 2 days a week but hopefully 3
  • Do Yoga or Pilates once a week
  • Do two 5k's at the end of October
  • Make two clean-eating (non processed food) meals a week
  • Make overnight oats at least twice a week for breakfast
  • Blog at least three times a week to keep myself accountable
Hopefully those goals help me to keep on track a little better as I start to get into my fall/winter schedule.  I am finding it challenging to balance a lot of stuff this year and I don't know why that is. Maybe it is old age setting in.  Ugh to getting older!

QOTD:  Does setting goals or planning races help keep you on track?

A month long hiatus....

...but I've returned!  Hello Friends!  Sorry to be gone so long from the writing end of the blogging world.  I stopped posting my own blogs this past month, but I didn't stop reading yours.  I enjoyed keeping up with you but just didn't have the motivation or time to get my own thoughts down onto the keyboarding and into the computer.

September was and always is a crazy month and I am kindaof glad it is over with.  I'm ready for things to get back to normal and into a routine.  Just a quick recap of what happened at the end of August and all of September - in bullet form because I'd  never have time to type it all out in paragraph form
  • Finished half marathon below my goal time, but finished strong
  • Back to school preparations and in service
  • Busy working with a student teacher
  • Severe allergies, resulting in a crazy sinus infection
  • Labor Day 5k all stuffy and barely able to breathe
  • Flood and no school for 2 1/2 days
  • Roads and bridges washed out
  • Adjusting to a crazy teaching schedule with middle school and high school kids
  • Lots of Lesson Planning
  • My Sister's Wedding Weekend with rehersal dinner, bachelorette party, wedding, reception, and gift opening/eatalltheleftoverfood gathering.
  • Still fighting a crazy sinus infection
  • Air Show and Hot Air Balloon Ride
  • Doctors and dentists appointments
  • Shopping for a new car
  • Rain, rain and more rain can really dampen your spirits
  • Another half marathon with crazy hills and only 4 days of running during the month of September.  Rough...but I finished in 2 hrs and 12 mins.
  • Buying a new car
  • Surviving the month of September

The shadow of our hot air balloon.

6 of the 9 balloons that went up for a ride that day.

The Balloon Glow!  What a neat adventure!
Oi!  After typing all that I am really glad that October is here.  Fall weather, cooler temps, leaves changing colors, the smell of apples and pumpkins baking....my favorite time of the year.  Today is a day to get myself back into the grove.  Cleaning my house, decorating for fall, baking apples and desserts, making homemade applesause, and making homemade New England clam chowder in a bread bowl.  YUMMY!

Here's hoping October treats me well and I will be back soon to write again.  I hope you all have a fabulous weekend!!!

Half Marathon Race Recap

Yesterday was the half marathon that I've been training for the last 10 weeks.  The weather was perfect.  A little cool, a slight breeze, clouds and no rain.  The previous year it poured for most of the race.

This was the third year for this race and the turnout was really good.  There was over 100 runners for the half marathon and quite a few for the 5k.  My dad, Amanda, Robyn and SB all ran the half as well.  SB and I started at the front with the plan to stay around 8:20 pace and then pick it up.

As soon as I started running I knew it was going to be rough.  We took off with the crowd and before we knew it our pace for the first mile was 7:45.  My feet were killing me most of mile one and two.  I seemed to notice every little rock under my foot.  This course is all on a rails to trails path which has gravel as the base.  I don't remember it being as rough last year - maybe because I was tromping through puddles and landing in mush.  I wished there was mush this year.

I had to stop at mile two and retie my shoes and lost SB.  Mile 2 - 5 I really had to get out of  my head.  I was beating myself up and knew I wasn't keeping the pace I needed to finish with my goal of under 1:45.  I finally started daydreaming, planning lessons, singing music and anything else I could think of to get my mind off of the actual running part.

At the turnaround I took a Chomp and got some Gatorade.  I caught up with SB at this point and pulled ahead.  She was finally in her marathon pace mode and was considering this a training run for her marathon in four weeks..After the turaround I seemed to finally catch my groove.   I just focused on the people ahead of me and got lost in the rhythm of things.  By mile 10 I started to feel it in my feet again and in my hips.  About a 1/2 mile from the finish Amanda's fiance jumped in with me and took me to the finish line.  Having him run with me that last bit really helped me to push it in.  Right at the finish line I had several sets of feet pounding and pushing behind me so I kicked it in and kept ahead of them.

My Garmin wasn't working properly so I had no idea what my time was.  When they finally posted our times I was happy to see that I finished in 1:49:23.  A min slower than last year according to posted results.  I didn't get close to 1:45 like I hoped but I still stayed under 1:50 so I was happy.

Overall it was a good race.  I like this one because it is mostly flat, out and back.  It seems to go quick and I can usually just get lost in the run.  Now I have five more weeks to train for an extremely hilly and challenging half marathon.  No goals for that marathon other than to finish.

Here's my week 10 recap and my plan for week 11:

Definitely looking forward to the decrease in miles this week. I have the fun Doggers and Jogger's 5k race this Saturday with Copper to look forward to as well.  Copper's fan club (aka the in-laws and Cowboy) are even planning on coming to cheer him on.

QOTD:  How was your weekend?  Any runs, races and goals accomplished?

HM Week 9 Recap

I can't believe my half marathon is next week already.  Where did the summer go!  Time just flies by anymore.

I've been very blessed during this training.  I've been able to get in my miles and have avoided any major sidelining injuries.  I haven't been pushing myself as hard as I did last year, but I still feel prepared for next week.  This week, I backed off a little bit since I had two long runs.  Here is what I had plan and what I actually accomplished:

I felt good after Saturday's long run.  My legs, feet and IT band haven't complained too much.  However, my head and belly have been grumbling.  I did not get enough fluids in after Saturdays run and definitely haven't been eating that well either.  I have been extremely hungry yesterday and this morning.  The head has been aching a little too.  So today's focus is making sure I get in plenty of fluids and calories.  My plan for this week is to continue to take it easy and just keep things stretched out and ready to go for Sunday.

I find that when I increase my miles I really struggle with balancing the calories in/calories out.  How do you guys do it?  Do you have any magic solutions for keeping your tummy happy?  I haven't been "hungry" for much.  I'm hungry but I don't really crave anything so I end up not eating because I don't know what to eat.  Does that make sense?   I guess I better think up some of my favorites so that I can be sure to eat properly this week.

Going with the Flow

Yesterday's Workout:  13.6 miles in 1 hour 59 mins and 18 secs with Dad, Anda and Rob

Yesterday was my second long run of the week since I pushed last weekends run to Monday.  I made plans with my dad and sisters to get through the long run.  It was great to have company the whole way.  I picked Dad, Amanda and Rob up about 7 miles away from my house and then we came here to the house.  We started from here and the first 7 miles really flew by.  We had water stops at 4, 5 and 7 miles.  That helped to break things up a bit.  Dad and I continued to finish our planned 12 miles.  I felt good at mile 9, but probably should have eaten the snack we had hidden at the water stop.  By mile 10 I was hungry.  Mile 11 and 12 were a little tough and then we realized that our run was longer than planned and ended up with an additional 1.65 miles.

I guess I am ready for next week!  I am looking forward to tackling the Hellbender Half for the third year in a row.  I don't know if I will get under 1 hr 45 mins, but I hope I get close or at least around the same time as last year which was 1 hr 47 mins.  Dad and I kept a good race pace for several of the miles, hopefully I can do it for most of them next week.

Today was a busy day with my sisters Bridal Shower.  It was a little stressful for me in the beginning since I realized that my cooler with the meat, cheese and cookies was left at home, in the garage, beside the car where Cowboy left it. He got things out of my trunk but never put the cooler in the trunk.  I had to call Cowboy and luckily he was able to meet me to halfway so that I could pick it up.  I had just a "tiny" Heather meltdown, spazzy attack which are just not pretty.  I wish I could handle those planchanger moments better than I do, but for some reason it just throws me all out of whack when things don't go as planned.  I don't always go with the punches as well as I should for some things, other times I have no problem going with the flow.  Today was not one of those days.   Definitely one of my flaws that I need to work on fixing.

Regardless of that little bump in the road, the shower was great.  The food was delicious and everyone seemed to have a wonderful time.  The bride and groom-to-be got showered with lots of love, gifts and well wishes.  Only 27 more days to their wedding!

QOTD:  Do you handle stressful times with grace and go with the flow?  How do you do it?  How do you not show everyone you are freaking out on the inside?     I wear my thoughts, feelings and emotions on my sleeves.  I don't know if I will ever perfect the way to mask all that and keep it together, but I hope that someday I can react a little more gracefully than I have been when I'm tossed a curveball.

Busy as a Bee

Yesterday's Workout:  6.5 mile run in 58:40 with Dad and SB

Just a quick post today to say that I am indeed still alive.  I have just been keeping extremely busy. It seems to be one thing after another at this time of the year.  Between getting ready for school, training for the half marathons, taking care of the garden, canning and freezing my garden goods, taking care of six dogs, and working on stuff around the house I'm only left with a hour or two to eat, shower and take a break before grabbing a few hours of sleep.

I've been taking it easy on the runs this week.  I did my sunday long run of 11 miles on Monday morning.  Tuesday and Wednesday I didn't get a run in at all.  Yesterday though I met up with Dad and SB in the morning and got in 6.5 miles.  Today I hope to find 30 mins to get in 3 easy miles before tomorrow morning's 12 mile run.  Next week I will take it really easy and rest up for the Hellbender Half Marathon.

I hope to have some pictures of the projects I've been working on sometime this weekend.  It will be a busy few days though as I get things ready for my sister's bridal shower on Sunday!!!  Life may be busy, but Life is Good!  I am so blessed with everything and I thank my Lord and Savior for that every day.

HM Week 8 Recap

Workout:  11.75 mile run in 1:48:22

What a great weekend!  I was having so much fun this weekend keeping busy with the husband.   I was thankful for the rain on Saturday because that made my husband, the energizer bunny, slow down a bit.   Cowboy melts in the rain (because he is made up of sugar and chocolate which is all he eats) so he tends to stay in the house or the garage and even takes time for afternoon naps.  He still kept me busy with three trips to town and work on the fence.

I tried to motivate myself to do my long run on Sunday but if I don't have plans with my running crew I am not so successful at getting out the door.  I talked myself into saving my long run for today.  That left me plenty of time to bake some zucchinni bread Sunday morning and work on the fence and garden with Cowboy.

This morning I did get myself out the door for a steamy, foggy 11.75 mile run.  I was glad that I gave myself two rest days.  I felt really good.  I was worried about my foot but it didn't start acting up until late in the run.  Today's route was out here in the sticks and was quite hilly as usual.  I did quite a few walking breaks to help get up some of these hillls...

Because I did my long run today, my week 8 total miles are a little low but I'll bounce back up next week.  Here's my recap from week 8

And a look at Week 9:

I am liking that my mid week runs are going back down to the 5 and 6 range instead of the 6, 7, and 8 range.  That will be much easier to keep up with as I start to gear back up for school.

Got lots to do today here at the house so I better get moving.  Those green beans aren't going to can themselves unfortuantely.

Lovely Friday with my Cowboy

Workout:  3.3 mile run with Copper in 28:44

What a great day!  For most of the day I couldn't tell you what day of the week it was, I am so confused - but regardless it was a wonderful day.  I spent the day with my husband enjoying life.  We didn't do anything too exciting just little things but it was nice to spend the whole day with him accomplishing things together.

This morning was an early morning hike with Cabella and Macy while they chased rabbits.  So I didn't get my run in during the morning like I planned.  We spent most of the afternoon working on the yard and expanding our farm fence to include the next section of our yard.  Cowboy got dinner around while Copper and I went for an evening run.  It finally cooled down quite a bit by 6:30 so it felt good, although still humid.  Copper was dragging his tail a bit on this run.  I don't think he fueled properly or hydrated himself enough.

I on the other hand felt good during the run.  It was after the run that the heel pain set in.  I don't know if I am getting heel spurs or Plantar fasciitis -regardless I don't like either.  I rolled my foot around on a frozen mason jar of strawberries for about five minutes which was as long as I could stand it. I think it helped a bit but I can still feel the aches.  Hoping a rest day and some stretching helps things out.  I am also going to look for some better cushioning sandals to where around the house and in the meantime try to wear some sneakers more to see if that prevents these after run aches..

All in all a wonderful Friday.  I am so glad it was a Friday afterall so that I can still enjoy a Saturday and a Sunday with my handsome Cowboy!

QOTD:  Any exciting plans for the weekend?  Fun run, long runs, races to accomplish?
We will be working on the fence when it isn't raining and I have my 11 mile long run on Sunday!

Feeling stronger

Workout:  7.49 mile run in 1:11:12 with Dad

It has been a while since I've run in the late afternoon.  Since school got out, I've been doing all my runs in the early morning.  So today's run was a little different.  Luckily the temps were not as high as forecasted.  It felt good when we got started at 3:40.  However up the first big hill I began to really feel the mugginess of the afternoon.  Dad and I kept up a pretty good pace up the hills and only walked a few times.

I was worried about doing a long run and not having any water stops but felt good.  I didn't feel dehydrated but I am sure a drink along the way would have tasted pretty good.  I felt pretty good.  I was a little worried that my yoga workout from yesterday would have left me a little sore for my run but guess what?  You'll never guess.... strength training makes you stronger!  Can you believe it!  It's true!

Just changing up your routine everynow and then makes a difference.  My muscles woke up yesterday and were used in a different way which I think make them work better for me today.  Yes I am a little sore but it is a good sore.  I really need to do strength training more often.  I like the feeling of knowing that I'm doing my body some good by challenging it in different ways.

When we got done with the long run I took my Gatorade Recovery.  It tasted pretty good after todays run.  I didn't get dinner in me until 7 and by then I was starting to feel lightheaded, so I knew I needed to get myself replenished.  I am realizing mroe and more just how important it is to refuel and help my muscles recover quickly.  Now it is time to get in a few more of ounces of water before I head to bed to get up for another run tomorrow morning.

Strength training is IMPORTANT!

Workout:  30 mins yoga and 30 min walk with Cabella and Macy

Why do I always put strength training on the back burner?  I do not like to strength train, but when I do work on it I realize just how weak I am.  Today I decided to work on some yoga since I've been saying that I would all summer long.

I can't believe how quickly you can lose strength.  I did a lot of yoga, pilates and strength training this spring but really slacked off once the warm weather got here.  I was ready to collapse within the first few minutes of the workout.  Nothing seemed easy.  All my muscles were tight and even the upward dog was difficult.  Ugh.   I really seem to lose flexibility if I just do all running and no strength training.  It feels like all my muscles are just shortened up and compacted.  Once I got done, I could already tell a difference - the slight backbends didn't hurt as much and I already felt "longer".  If that makes any sense.

I definitely need to work on this.  I can be motivated to run but never seem to find the extra time to work in strength training.  The only reason I did it today was because I didn't run and I didn't take the beagles to the club to chase rabbits.  I decided just to stay home and focus on little things I've been meaning to get to.

Moral of my story this morning is to remember that strength training is important and you will notice a difference in how you feel and how your body moves throughout the day and during your next run.  It really does help and shouldn't be forgotten about.  I know so many of you are great at balancing running and strength training and I am in awe of how you manage it all.  Maybe someday I will figure that balance out.

August, oh August...

Workout:  5.25 mile run in 48:09 with Dad and SB

August how did you get here so quickly???  Time never went this fast when I was a kid.  I don't know why it is flying by now.

I took the last two days off as well deserved rest days.  I didn't run other than to jog around the yard with the doggies.  This morning I met up with Dad and SB for a five mile run on the south side of town.  SB and I both grumbled and ouched for the first .25 miles as we stretched out the sore muscles from the long run.  As soon as we got the first ouchy part done I was doing pretty good.  We were cruising right along, after the half way point though we were all grumbling that the way back seemed a lot longer.

I've been trying to find a few good before run and during run fuel sources to help me out.  Today I tried the Gatorade Prime before the run. I took it the recommended 15 minutes before my run along with a granola bar.  During my run I felt really - unusually hot - the kindaof clammy hot that I get before I get sick.  I did not like that feeling at all.  I didn't feel nauseous just steaming hot.  It was only about 65 degrees but the humidity was creeping up.  I don't think it was the temps though.   I'm gonna blame it on the Prime for now but might try it again on Thursday.  Since it was only five miles I didn't take anything during the run.

I also had the Gatorade Recovery after the run with my delicious bagel twist.  I've had that before.  It tastes good and I think it works for me.  I definitely didn't feel parched and dehydrated.

Hopefully by my half marathon in two weeks I will have some good options figured out.

QOTD:  What do you take to fuel prior to a run - especially early in the morning? What do you use to fuel during the run?  What run distance do you take fuel - anything after 3, 5, 7 miles??  How many times do you take fuel during a half marathon?

HM Week 7 Recap

This past week was a very good week for my training.  I got in all my runs and got in all my miles, plus some.  I struggled during the week with the runs for various issues, but regardless I pushed myself and got out the door.

This is when the training seems to always get tough for me for some reason.  My motivation starts to dwindle and I start to put other things first since I am gearing back up for school.  I am really trying to work on staying positive and focusing on the goal I have set for the half marathon in August.

Here's a look at Week 7:

A little high in total miles since I did a long run on Monday and a long run on Saturday.  Now however I am back on schedule for Sat/Sun long runs - hopefully.

Week 8 Plan is as follows:

My Tuesday and Thursday miles might get moved around a bit since I have to be in town to conduct two trainings on those days.  But otherwise I should be all set.

I am looking forward to my second rest day in a row and have been focusing on eating properly to refuel my lil muscles.  I did have some calf cramps last night so when I get my groceries today I am going to be sure to stock up on some bananas.  They always seem to help prevent those crazy cramps.

QOTD:  What do you do to help with the occassional and sneak attack calf or leg cramps?

Double Digits training run

Workout:  10 mile run in 1:28:14 with Dad, SB, Rob and Anda

What a nice way to start off my morning, which lead to a beautifully nice and productive day.  Got to love what running can do to your outlook on the day.  I had a great 10 mile run to clear my head, chat to my family, enjoy the early morning sunrise and watch the city waking up.

Yesterday I posed the question "To rest or not to rest the day before a long run". Thank you for leaving your comments. I like hearing what you ladies have to say. I typically take a rest day before a long run or race; however, this week it didn't happen and I wasn't sure how that would effect me. Today was my fourth consecutive day to run.  I usually don't run four days in a row so I was a little worried to how my legs would respond this morning.  I was afraid they would be dead and miserable.  I made sure to fuel properly yesterday, drink lots of fluids and get a good night's rest.  I think that helped out a lot.  My legs actually felt really good.  I didn't start to struggle until after mile 9 which for me makes sense since 9 miles is the most I've done since January.  I like building on one mile at a time to my long runs each week.  I feel like that is the best way for my legs.

I did have some Power Bar Energy Gel Blast with caffeine today during the long run. Prior to this summer I didn't use any of those energy gels or gu's.   I figured I would give a few different kinds a try and see how they help.  I can definitely feel them working and enjoy the little burst of energy they give me.  I don't know how I ever trained and ran a full marathon without discovering and using those energy gels.  I don't feel that I NEED them during these long runs, but they do seem to help.

I kept pretty active the rest of the day working around the house with Cowboy.  That helped to keep my legs from cramping up.  I did notice that I was getting a headache shortly after the run so I downed some Gatorade and water.  This evening my groin area and hips were tight some I did some stretching to hopefully avoid major issues tomorrow or when I run again.  I am looking forward to my rest from running day, but know that I will be doing some hiking and working here around the house to keep me busy.

Overall I am very pleased with this week's training.  I had two long runs since I didn't do my long run last weekend but my legs didn't give out on me.  Tomorrow I will put together my week 7 training recap and take a look at week 8's plan.  I can't believe my first HM of the summer is just three weeks away.

QOTD:  Does your training plan build on one mile at a time to your long runs or does it jump up in increments?

To Rest or Not To Rest Before a Long Run??

Workout:  3.3 mile run in 31:04

Welcome to Fitness Friday!  To new readers, I hope you enjoy my blog.  I am looking forward to reading more of your blogs.

So the big question for me today is: "Is it better to rest or not to rest before a long run/race?"   I couldn't decided on the answer to that question today. So I thought I would put it out there for ya'lls thoughts and opinions.

I decided to go ahead and do an easy short 3 mile run today, even though I've run the previous two days (5 and 6 miles) and have a long run (10 miles) planned for tomorrow.  My thoughts were that the run today would help to get my legs loose and not so tight for the early start.  At the same time I don't want them to be "too" tired.  They feel good at the moment, but do need some stretching.  Sometimes I take a rest day before long runs and races, sometimes I don't.  I really don't know what is better for you.   What do you think works the best?

The biggest issue I've been having lately isn't my legs being tired, but the bottom of my feet and heels are sore.  I think it is all the barefootin' I do around here plus the not very supportive sandels and flipflops.  I have been thinking about putting some cushioning insoles in my sneakers but I don't want that to screw up how my shoes feel or how I run.  What I really probably need to do is wear sneakers or supportive shoes during the day but I HATE HOT FEET!!  I love to be barefoot or in sandels so that would be a struggle for me.

Another quick thing to  share.... I've recently gotten addicted to smoothies and green monsters.  However, I was tired of the mess and cleanup using my big ol blender.  This week I purchased my new after a run, buddy - the Oster My Blend!

So nice!!!  Quick, easy to use and when I'm done with my smoothie, I just wash it out and fill it up with water to help increase my water intake throughout the day. I loved it after the first try and went and got my sister one as a belated birthday gift.  She loves hers too.

QOTD:  Do you rest or not rest the day before a long run/race?  What works best for you?

Quiet, Reflective Day

Workout: 6 mile run in 60 mins without Copper and the ipod

Today is just one of those quiet reflective days.  I feel like I have a little bit of a cold coming on, so I wasn't sure if I wanted to my run this morning but I convinced myself that I should.  Then when I got downstairs Copper and I got into a little "fight" which as silly as it is brought me to tears.  A sure sign that I am getting sick. Yes I know getting in a fight with a dog, how ridiculous.  But this dog has his nasty (I was abandon in the woods and had to survive on my own for two months before Cowboy took me in) moments and when I don't feel well my tolerance level gets shot.   I couldn't handle it, cried for 5 mins, curled up on the couch, and almost let the internal battle win again and not go for my run.  BUT I didn't.  I got up, left Copper at home - which left him crying...ha, there, we were even!  I didn't have my ipod since it is in my car which is at the shop again.  So left just me, my feet and the two bickering - should I- shouldn't I - angels on my shoulder.

Those stupid angels bickered for at least the first two miles.  The Should I angel won and we kept on going on the planned 6 mile hilly loop.  Once I got to those hills and just focused on getting up them I was all better.  By mile 4 I was glad I was out there on the road pounding out the cold and frustrations with the steady sound of my sneakers slapping the pavement.

I don't know why this summer has been so tough with my motivation issues but I am glad I am digging in and finding the will somewhere.  When I got home I had the wonderful running energy surge so I dove right into the housework that was screaming at me. I turned on my uplifting music playlist up nice and loud and got busy.  Three loads of laundry, clean floors, and clean bathrooms later my energy surge is about dried up.  Now it is time to work on canning some pickles and making some delicious zucchini baked goods.

QOTD: Does anyone have any good zucchini recipes to share?

Running the Nerves Away

Workout:  4.8 mile run  in 43:14 with Dad

I really had trouble falling asleep last night.  I just couldn't get my little brain to shut down for the night.  I was tossing and turning worrying about my presentation today to fellow co-teachers.  I spent lots of time the last two weeks prepping, but was still nervous.  I've done a gazillion different training workshops with my old job and I've presented at other teacher related conferences but I was still worried about presenting in front of teachers I see every day.  I only had three hours to teach them about Prezi, VoiceThread, Wordle, Wallwisher, Voki and Polleverywhere.  Being the crazy schedule oriented person I had the training mapped out minute by minute.  Somehow I made it through.  My co-teachers were fantastic.  Picked up everything very quickly, asked great questions and really contributed to my training.  It was probably one of my best trainings.  And the plus to working so hard on this training is that I learned lots of somethings along the way.  It really helped me too by practice putting those tools together.

Thank goodness I met up with my dad this morning for a run.  He helped me talk and run the nerves right out of me.  We just ran around in town and I was so thankful that I actually "liked" running today.  It all felt good again.  I didn't feel like I was dying.  Probably because my mind was distracted with internal conversations about my presentation that it didn't really notice all the running that was going on.

So luckily my mind will be quite busy for the next week with more planning, crazy internal dialogue, ideas and figuring out my next three presentations.  Maybe running will be back to feeling fun and enjoyable since I'll be so distracted.   I will test that theory out as I finish up three more runs this week, starting with a six miler tomorrow.

HM Course Practice

Workout:  8.8 mile run in 1 hr 27 mins with SB

It was a tough one today.  I was quite the NegativeNancy when I started out on the run this morning with SB.  I felt like it was going to be a tough one the night before so I checked to see what SB was doing and our miles were similiar so I decided to join her.  I am glad I did, otherwise I would have ended it way before my 9 miles.

I feel like I go through this slump at the beginning, middle, and end of my summer training.  This morning I was saying again, "This is my last half marathon - the training is so tough, I'm tired of it.."  I said that last year and I think the year before as well.  Yet here I am.   It is just a slump and I know I will come out of it, but sometimes I just wonder why I put my body through this each summer.

I know, I know... it is for the challenge and that overwhelming sense of accomplishment when I am done - but that is so hard to remember and rationalize on days like today.  I think the heat has a lot to do with it, but it is still hard even when the temps do go down.

Today we ran a part of the route that we will take when we run the half marathon in September.  That HM is going to be rough to say the least since a good chunk of it is all hills.  I am glad my first HM is all flat, that will be my confidence booster and hopefully goal setter.  The second one is going to be just for the experience.  I am not expecting anything great on that one.  Which is a good thing because based on today's run it is going to be back in the two hour range with all those hills.

Regardless todays run and all my runs are worth it.  It keeps me active, gets me outside and really does lighten my mood (eventually).  Here is a great quote that I always remember when I question why I do this,  from a long-time friend of mine:
"But why do I run? I ask myself this question often, especially on the longer runs where all you have is your mind. I'm not a particularly good runner; I'm certainly not built to run fast. I'm not really even built to run far. Yet I return to the sport - indeed to the experience - almost daily. And I participate in events with fervor. The reasons are not noble. I do not run to reach some nirvana, to lose weight or to face fear. Quite simply, I run because I can." ~Mark B.
Source
I think that sums it up perfectly for me.  But I still forget and grumble at myself occassional for putting myself through it again and again.  I know I'd miss it if I couldn't do it.  So a reminder to myself:  Treasure each and every run - in the sun, heat, snow, rain, sleet, and fog - the bad, the good, the ugly, the easy ones and the tough ones.  You Run Because You Can!

QOTD:  How are you doing with your runs?  Have you gotten into a slump lately?

One Month Away

I've been a little MIA lately.  It always seems that towards the end of the month I slack off on my blog posting.  Things have been busy this weekend.  Friday was filled with an early morning run, working in the heat, cleaning the clubhouse and a family picnic in the park.  Saturday was my rest day from running which was good.  That left me plenty of time to hang out with my sisters and TinTin as we tried on bridesmaid dresses and planned Amanda's bridal shower.  After girl time the boss, aka. Cowboy, put me to work at home.  At 11 pm, when I am usually an hour into my dreamland we headed out with Charisma to get her started chasin racoon.  The big dogs went for a little chase then afterwards so this girl didn't get into bed until after 1 am.

When I don't stick to my sleep routine my next day is all goofed up.  I was so exhausted this morning and had no energy to tackle my long run of the day.  It was still muggy, sticky hot and my legs/feet were just tuckered out.  So I postponed my long run to Monday once again.

My first half marathon of the summer is just one month away!!  I still got lots of work to do but am on the right track.  Here's a recap from this week:

I had a long run on Monday and nice 6 mile on Wednesday with Dad, SB, Rob and Ella.  On Thursday, I toughed out a run with Copper.  Friday was a quick 3 miler with Copper out here on the hills.  Today was supposed to be 9 but I just didn't get out there.  I really didn't think it would be a good one if I had managed to get out.  Between exhaustion, hunger and the heat it would have been rough.  So tomorrow when it is suppose to be a refreshing 65 degrees I am going to get in my 9 miles.  I think I might work on them in town where it is a little flater and more opportunities to stop and get a drink if needed.

I have a busy week with dr appts and my first professional development training for teachers at my school.  I am a little nervous, but I've been working on my presentation and all the resources for a week now.  I think it will go pretty good.  Once I get that training done on Wednesday, I will need to get busy on the remaining three trainings I have the first two weeks of August.  I got some work to do on prepping training for using Moodle and developing an online course for 4th graders.

I suppose I need to get working on developing my own 8th grade online course too.  Lots to do and time is slipping away.  The new school year is going to be here before I know it.

QOTD:  Have any of you taken an online course?  What do you like or dislike about online courses?

Run anyways

Workout:  5 mile run in 45:50
"That's what runners do; they run. If you're not feeling well, you run; if it's lousy weather, you run, and if you're under stress, you obviously go for a run. You run to clear your head. You run to ease the ache in your muscles, and you run just so you can breathe a little fresh air. No matter what else is going on, there's always time for a run. " ~Anonymous

I felt fine, the weather was lousy, I cleared my head, I eased the ache in my muscles, I didn't breathe any fresh air but I still went for a run.  Even though it was a glorious 72 degrees with oppressive humidity and crazy blanket of fog, I got up to run anyways. I will be running anyways again tomorrow even though the low is only going to be 76 degrees.  I need that run because...That's what runners do.  We are a crazy bunch but no matter what else there is always time for a run.

QOTD:  Did you brave the nation-wide heat to run today?  Why did you run anyways?

Fun in the Sun

Workout:  6 mile run in 56:37

Today I enjoyed some Fun in the Sun with my family.  I met up with Dad, SB, Robyn and little miss Ella Beans for a 7 am morning run.  We met and did the river walk loop since it would be nice and flat and easy to push Ella Beans along for the ride.  We kept a very comfortable easy pace for the first 5 miles and then SB and I kicked it into gear for the last mile.

After we were a sweaty mess we headed back to Amanda's house to get showered cleaned up and enjoy Mr. Sticky sticky buns topped with peanut butter that my Daddy picked up for us.  Rob, Ella, SB and I all then got ourselves around and headed out to the local fair.  We were shootin to beat the crowds and get there before it got too stinky hot.  One of two ain't bad.  The fair was empty but it was already stinky hot by 10 am.  We were once again a sweaty mess but still enjoyed seeing all the Bahs, Nays, Oink-Oinks, Moos, Cockadoodle-doos, and Ella's favorites the bunnies.  We also got to ride the carousel and as soon as it stopped Ella was signing and screaming "more-more".  However after lunch that little cutie-pie could barely keep her eyes open.  She was falling asleep as we changed her diapers.  What a trooper!

Great day!  Looking forward to more family time on Friday and Saturday.  Until then, I am finding ways to keep cool and hope you are able to do the same.

Hot, Hot and Hot

Workout:  1.5 mile hike with the Beagles

I can't believe how hot and muggy it is outside.  It is gross!  And according to the wonderful weather guys it is just going to get worse especially on Thursday and Friday.  Ugh!  Just keeping my eye on Surday and Monday and hoping the low humidity and fresh feeling comes true.

This morning I got up early to take the beagles to the club to chase some rabbits around in the wet brush before it got too hot.  Thank goodness we got some good rain last night.  My garden really needed a nice drink of water.  Now maybe things will grow a little better.  I walked around with the rabbit chasers for two hours this morning and hopefully started to work the kinks out of my knee.

I don't know what happened yesterday after my run, but my knee was really sore last night.  I was having trouble putting weight on it so I iced it before I went to bed.  It is still tender today however I think the more I stretch it out the better it feels. I hope it doesn't give me issues tomorrow when I run.  I am trying my best to notfold and tuck it under when I am sitting here on the couch.  I don't think that helps the matter much.

Now off to find some ways to stay cool and come up with ideas for dinner.  I hate eating hot meals when it is incredibly hot out.

QOTD:  What do you make for dinner when it is humid, sticky, gross and 95 degrees out?  How do you stay cool?  I end up not cooking and eating a lot of simple sandwiches. Last night was BLT sandwiches.  Not the most balanced and healthy meal.  At least I got two veggies in there.  I really need to find some good receipes.

HM Week 5 Recap

Workout:  8.9 mile run in 1 hr 15 min

Oh boy my training and my summer vacation is just zooming by.  Can't believe I've finished Week 5 of training.  Overall I am really happy with the way training is going.  I was a little concerned two weeks ago, but I think I got over the road bumps and am on track now.  Here's a look at planned and actual training for week 5:

I didn't get my long run last week in until Monday.  That long run I think was a turning point for me, because it made me realize that I could hold a good pace for a long distance if I wasn't faced with crazy hills.  I stuck to the plan for the rest of the week and had some good runs early in the morning.  On Saturday, I had one of best times in the past few years in a 5k race.  I did not get myself motivated to do my long run yesterday so I rested up and did my long run today.

I had Cowboy drop me off again on this way to work about 9 miles out.  It was the same route as last Monday which I like because it is mostly flat or downhill.  I didn't feel as good as I did last week, but it was still a good training run.  It helped me work on those mental issue that I struggle with when I am on a long run by myself.

So here's the plan for the rest of this week:

I might shuffle around tomorrow's run to Wednesday but everything else should be on target.  It will be nice to not have a race this weekend, so that I can just focus on doing my  long run.

K, enough about training and running for now.  Yesterday I had date night with my husband.  Date night doesn't happen very often in our house so when they do I really look forward to them.  This date night is a reoccuring annual date and one I look forward to.  We headed out to the Rodeo and Bull-a-Rama for fabulous corn-dogs on a stick and some bullride watching.  Cowboy rode bulls for 10 years but misses riding quite a bit during the summer time.  He did say last night that he isn't sure he wants to come next year because it depresses him.   I like watching the bullriding with him and having him explain things.  He only rode for the first two years we started dating.  I always enjoyed watching him ride.  I know he misses it but I am glad I don't have to worry about him getting injured on the back of those crazy animals.

Here's a few more pictures from last week that I never got off my cell phone to share:

This is my cutie-pa-tootie- niece tickling me from a distance.

Such a doll!  Glad I get to spend some time with her this week while she is at Gmom and GrandBob's house.
Someone has been having trouble getting out of bed lately.  I end up making the bed with her in it.

New hair-do all nice and straightened from the hairdresser.  Lately I've been too lazy to straighten it and end up with a crazy curl mess.  Plus it's so humid it was just end up all crazy anyhow.

And last but not least a little wildflower bouquet to brighten the day.
QOTD:  Did you do any training runs or races this weekend?  How are you dealing with your runs in this crazy summer hot weather?
